FIVE YEARS OF HARDWORK
Over the last five years the school has witnessed a sustained and spirited effort by the Old Boys Association to renovate the dormitories and the ablution blocks to make them habitable and hygienic.
It was during the 80th anniversary celebrations in 2013 that the association resolved to uplift the standards of the dilapidating residences through massive renovations and paintings. A visit to the dorms, especially Washington house by Dr. Gikonyo, persuaded the executive to abandon the aim of construction of the hall to first renovate the dorms. The effort is evidently remarkable and the environment quite conducive to learning. Those who left before this initiative can gladly appreciate the facelift currently enjoyed by students residing in Washington and Wilberforce being the first project followed lately by Wambugu, Kimathi and Muhoya.
The toilets and bathrooms have been refurbished with tiles that make them easy to clean and maintain. The cubicles now enjoy a fresh coat of paint that makes them brighter while more solar panels are in the process of being installed to ensure that every student gets a warm shower. More washing basins have also been provided in the ablution blocks to lower the demand for boys to carry buckets from home. Crucially, more toilets have been constructed to reduce the waiting time during breaks.
According to the Deputy Principal Mr. Kinyua Karuiru, the Old Boys idea could not have come at a better time. “We appreciate their effort as it has given the school a major facelift and the living conditions for the boys have been greatly improved. The environment is conducive. We appeal to all the Old Boys wherever they are to join hands and assist in the improvement of this great institution that they are all proud of”.
He says the boys are extremely happy with the new developments with some loudly joking that their school has now achieved the status of a college. With more still on the way, Mr. Kinyua believes that the boys’ hygiene and learning conditions have been tremendously cushioned.
Driving the refurbishing agenda with the assistance of several dedicated former students is Professor Maina Muchara who chairs the Association. He says the old structures needs to be maintained and no effort should be spared in making the lives of the boys comfortable. The students are excited about the new venture that has largely improved their living conditions and boosted their morale.

Upgrading the Heart of Kagumo High School: KOBA’s New Assembly Hall Project (2024)
In a significant development for Kagumo High School, the Kagumo Old Boys Association (KOBA) has embarked on a transformative project to upgrade the school’s assembly hall. This initiative marks a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the school’s infrastructure and provide students with a conducive environment for learning and extracurricular activities.
A Vision Realized: From Wood and Iron to a Modern Assembly Hall
The decision to upgrade the assembly hall came early this year when the KOBA committee, led by Professor Maina Muchara, recognized the need for improved facilities that align with the school’s growing needs. The old assembly hall, originally constructed from wood and corrugated iron sheets, had become outdated and inadequate for modern requirements. It was a space that served multiple purposes—from assemblies to entertainment events and exam rooms—but was increasingly unable to meet the demands of the school community.
Recognizing this, KOBA resolved to construct a new, purpose-built assembly hall that would not only replace the old facility but also significantly enhance the school’s aesthetics and functionality. The project saw the old structure being dismantled to make way for a state-of-the-art building that reflects modern design and provides a versatile, space for the school.
Features of the New Assembly Hall
The new assembly hall boasts several impressive features:
- Modern Construction: Constructed using durable materials, the hall features an efficient raised roof for better ventilation and natural lighting, ensuring a comfortable environment for assemblies and other activities.
- Furnishings and Finishes: Fully furnished with comfortable, ergonomic seating, the hall now accommodates students, staff, and visitors comfortably. The interiors have been fitted with high-quality tiles, polished finishes, and energy-efficient lighting, transforming the space into a vibrant hub for school activities.
- Versatile Usage: Apart from serving as a venue for assemblies and entertainment sessions, the hall can also function as an additional exam room, addressing the school’s needs for more examination spaces during national exams. This multi-functional capability makes the new hall an invaluable asset to the school.
Impact on the School Community
The transformation of the assembly hall has had a profound impact on the Kagumo High School community. According to Deputy Principal Mr Daniel K. Gitonga, the new facility has greatly improved the school’s ambiance and provided a conducive environment for student engagement and learning.
“The new assembly hall has not only transformed the physical landscape of the school but has also boosted the morale of both students and staff. It offers a modern, spacious, and aesthetically pleasing environment that enhances the overall learning experience,” he said.
Acknowledging Key Contributions
This upgrade was made possible through the generous contributions and unwavering commitment of the Kagumo Old Boys Association through the Endowment Fund. Under the leadership of Professor Muchara, KOBA has been at the forefront of this initiative, galvanizing support from alumni worldwide to contribute towards this vital project.
A key donor in this initiative was Dr. Gideon Muriuki, Group Managing Director and CEO of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya Group, whose significant financial contribution came at a crucial time and facilitated the timely completion of the project. Dr. Muriuki’s support exemplifies the spirit of giving back and underscores the collaborative effort between the school community and external benefactors.
“The new assembly hall is a reflection of the spirit and dedication of our alumni,” said Professor Muchara. “It’s an investment not just in bricks and mortar but in the future of our students, ensuring they have the best facilities to excel in all areas of their lives.”
The new assembly hall stands as a symbol of progress and a commitment to providing a conducive learning environment at Kagumo High School. As KOBA continues to work towards enhancing the school’s infrastructure, this project sets a benchmark for future endeavors aimed at uplifting the school’s standards. The upgraded assembly hall is a legacy of collective effort and pride, promising a bright and prosperous future for Kagumo High School.
